Mai Pearls at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh

Mysterious Mai at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh

We have sent our mysterious model "Mai" to have a look and report back what went on at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival sadly ended on Tuesday, but "fret not" as we sent our mysterious advertising girl "Mai" to have a look and report back on what was going on there!

Mai very obligingly put on her ivory white freshwater pearls and took off to the lovely capital of Scotland! Immediately her first impressions of the festival were of amazement! "Everywhere you look there are posters advertising performances. A total of 2,453 shows were available in the city!Bite my pearls if these are not impressive numbers!"

Among other plays, Mai watched 'City & Iris', a delicious drama played by Lecoq-trained actors, that tells the story of a girl trapped in her own insecurities and who uses her glasses as an excuse for hiding from life. Moreover, Mai also put on her pearls and went to see the great one man comedy "Dr Brown Because", whose actor cleverly uses stares, awkward silences and a fearful audience as part of an amusing show!

All in all, the Fringe Festival provides great entertainment and we definitely recommend you put it in your diary for next year! Now, if you have your agendas open, September seems to be "THE month" for vintage fairs in London! Our model, Mai, will definitely bring you some exclusive pics of what went on in some of these fairs as well as great ideas of how to model your pearls! Watch this space!

With love,

Mai Pearls Team

P.S.: You are invited to suggest places where Mai should go and wear her pearls!

The final letter

Although Mai Pearls sponsored 40 children from south China last academic year and each one of them wrote us a letter, only 5 of those letters have been translated into English and this is the final letter. I hope that you have enjoyed reading them and that they have encouraged you to think about ethics when shopping. It may seem like it does not make a difference, but these letters show that it truely does both practically and emotionally.

Dear donor,

Thank you very much to give a helping hand to me! Your help lightens our family’s burden!
Also your help makes me cherish my chance to study! When I met difficulties, your help make me face it and resolve it!

I know you set aside money from your daily spend and donate it to me, which not only help my physical needs but also encourage my spirit! Even I say thousands of thanks, it cannot express my appreciation! What I can do is only wish you have a happy life!

Living in an impoverished area, I don’t feel alone because of your dedication and love! I know there are most of children like me getting your help in our school! In order to show our grateful heart, we study hard and compete with each other! We are good students in our class! Therefore, your support is our motivation to do everything well!

Once I fainted and was sent to hospital! When my parents took care of me, I saw their white hair and wrinkle! I felt their love and expectation to me!

I believe that I’ll choose a right way in my future journey. Instead of coming to a halt, I’ll face the difficulties bravely! Your spirit encourages me to change my life! I know my value is not like clay, my life is not like living on a branch, and my heart will fly in the sky!

There is an old Chinese saying: “Drop the boon of the water; be to flow out spring to report mutually!” (Little help brings much return). I know that I’m a common girl but I have a positive attitude to my future! I also want to begin my career in the future to reward your love and help other needy people!

Thanks again!

Beat regards

Dear donor,

How is everything going on with you?

How time flies! I become a Grade 3 student in junior high school and prepare the examination in July! My grateful sentiments come from the heart and thank you very much for your help!

My parents and I don’t know how to express our appreciation to you! I know that the financial crisis hit the world; however, you still help us! Your behavior makes me moved so much!

I’ll try my best to study hard and pass the examination to go to the senior high middle school!

Your dedication is a good example for me! When I find a job, I’ll do the same thing you do!

Best regards

Sponsor a student

Here is another letter from a very grateful sponsored student;

"Dear donor,

How is everything going on with you?

I used to sit besides the window to meditate, to look at stars to think, to wander on the street, and to sit alone in the classroom when I stand in the cross road.

When I was in Grade one in junior, I used to give up my studying. However, you give your helping hand to me, which makes me get out of the difficulties!

I once was a little boy, but now I stand in the cross road without confusion. I know how to walk in the life of my journey.

I am very lucky! Because of your help, I entered the junior high middle school, which is rare chance for children in our mountainous area! Your help makes me pick up my belief! Hereby, I want to say thank you to you!

The success is made up by diligent. In the following days, I’ll study hard for my examination for senior high middle school on July 2.

I believe that I can get a good result because of my hard work and your encouragement!

Tomorrow is far away from me;

Dreams are beautiful;

Happiness is going on;

Joy is forever!

If I can enter the senior high middle school, I know you and my family will be proud of me! I’ll try my best to study hard to gain more knowledge and friends!

Maybe it’s a dream, may be the dream become true!

An old saying “Remember the gratitude and try to repay it!” I got it!

In the future, I maybe have a happy family, a good job, and contribute more to the society…..

Now I just want to say thanks to you!

Regards

Jewellery with a conscience

Here is a letter from Ma Qiang telling Mai Pearls how the sponsorship for her education has affected her.

Dear donor,

Your love likes the love of mother.

The love of mother may be a sentence, a kiss, a smile, an expression in her eye, a gesture, a cup of mile, or a sweater knitted by her…

This kind of love seems a droplet—very small but many of them become a river of love!

Your love and carefulness likes this river of love! Thank you very much for helping me! I don’t know how to express my thanks to you! I just say thanks again with tears of gratitude.

I’ll always remember your kind-heart!

Blessing

Ethical Pearl Jewellery

As you may or may not know, 10% of Mai Pearls' profits are given to charities based in China. This year we have been supporting Operation Blessing's education program. Here is a recent translated letter from one of the students that Mai Pearls have sponsored;

Dear donor,

Hope everything is going on very well with you!

The time flows quietly, and the life makes a poem! It is urgent for me to have an examination to enter the senior high middle school.

With your help, I can complete my study in the junior high middle school, which lightens the burden of my family! Also, I learnt a lot of knowledge in the school. I’ll enter the senior high school and so do my brother! My father is more than 50 years old and cannot do labor work! Our income is low and only can meet the basic needs of our life! Thus, I study hard in these three years!

Finally, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for supporting and encouraging me!

Wish you go on very well with your job!

Designing Pearl Jewellery

One happy customer recently asked me how I come up with the Mai Pearls pearl jewellery designs. Whilst I am in the UK I cut out images of jewellery that I like and put it all in a scrap book which I later look at and use as inspiration for new designs. I also read trend prediction magazines to try to keep up to date on colour combinations and new looks. Most of the pearl jewellery design work is done in China with my suppliers. I am surrounded by pearls, semi precious stones and the clasps so I know what can be created and how it will look. I find the colours of the stones inspiring and thankfully I don't ever seem to have the equivalent of writers block whilst I'm there. This year I only had 6 days to put together the Autumn Winter 2009 and Spring Summer 2010 collections! Designing jewellery is not only a creative process but if you take on board future trend predictions, it is also very much a calculated decision.

Pearl Wedding Jewellery

From my office window I can see a cherry tree full to bursting with fluffy white blossom. This blossom reminds me of the fact that the wedding season is fast approaching.

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, we at Mai Pearls have had a little spring clean by making some changes to the website's home page. There is now a pearl wedding jewellery page which once clicked on, divides into bridal earrings, bracelets, necklaces and bridesmaids earrings, bracelets and necklaces. This has been done to make the online shopping experiance clearer and more focused for the customer. An Zhengquan's letter

Here is the last of the translated letters from the students in south china who have been sponsored by Mai Pearls in their studies;

Dear Uncles and Aunties:

How are you?

Hopeful you are in good health and your jobs are going smoothly. I want to tell you something about myself. Although my family is very poor, we are all in good health, and we love each other, so I feel that I am the happiest one in the world. I am studying middle school and I believe things will be better through my struggles.

I want to share what happened three years ago. My father said to me, “How about staying at home? “Because the family’s situation is really hard”. I understood clearly what he meant, that is to give up my education and stay home to help out financially. Fortunately I heard that you would provide a scholarship for me, and this is the reason I am still here in school. Since the change in education policy, which relieves the burden on my family, my parents have bought some more learning materials and daily necessities for us. We still are saving money for my high school tuition. It is difficult to cover the cost of living, but I will try my best to borrow money to finish my study. And I must never be unworthy of our teachers' untiring teachings and my parents hope.

I'm much obliged to you for helping us and I can say nothing but thank you very much.

Yours Sincerely,
An zhengquan

Liqiang's Letter to Mai Pearls

Every year Mai Pearls donates 10% of the profits to a Chinese charity. Last year we donated the profits to Operation Blessing for their sponsor a Chinese student program. Here is a letter from one of the sponsored students;

Dear Uncles and Aunties:

How are you?

My parents need not worry about my cost of living since you have helped me go to school. And with the development of society and our country, my family’s situation is changing greatly so that we have enough food to eat.

Since China started carrying out the education policy of free tuition and free textbooks, we only need to make up for the cost of living in school. With your help, my family only needed to pay half of my living expenses when boarding in school. Instead, they now buy more rice for the family and send my younger brother to school with their savings. Going to school will change my brother’s life.

We just had an exam, and I scored 480 points, which is not good enough to me, so I will try my best to study harder. I clear know who I am, a new generation, the future of China and its successors, so I will never give up and I firmly believe that I will be successful.

Thank you for the new life you have given to me, which changes my destiny, and gives me a chance to back school, so that I will continue struggling for my dream. It is a good chance to me, and I will treasure it. Since I cannot return your affection today with anything else except, I can only say thank you with all my mind and all my heart.

Yours Sincerely,
Liqiang

Sha Luojin's letter to Mai Pearls

This week is Fair trade week and as an ethical company we are posting letters that are written to Mai Pearls and their customers from sponsored Chinese students in south China. Mai Pearls give 10% of their profits to Operation Blessing China. Here is a letter from Sha Luojin;

Dear Uncles and Aunties:

How are you?

Our family is very poor, because of more people and less land, and we have no food to eat about April or May. My parents work for the rich to food, and borrow us living cost in school. In order to save money, my sister and I back home for lunch. It is about 2,000 meters of mountains from school to my home for times in everyday.

Since I have entered the junior middle school, the help of you through Operation Blessing China improve the cost of my living greatly. It is impossible for me to buy learning materials in my primary school, so I had to copy others learning material sentences by sentences with hand, while I have brought all set of learning materials.

Since the change in education policy, which relieves the burden on my family, my parents have bought some more learning materials and daily necessities for us. And my parents give me 6yuan every week for my breakfast and some pocket money, with which I can eat sometimes at school because I have to finish all my homework. I will be punished if I can finish all my homework. Your helping encourages me both in physical and in emotional.

How happy I am now, but how can I imagine the following year. If I enter high middle school, my family can not provide mu tuition and cost of living.

Hopeful you are in good health and your jobs are going smoothly.

Yours Sincerely,
Sha luojin

Mu Xiuzhen's story

Mai Pearls donates 10% of their profits to Operation Blessing's Chinese care program. Each year the students write letters and below is one of those letters, having been translated thankfully!

Dear Uncles and Aunties:

How are you?

Hopeful you are in good health and your jobs are going smoothly.

It is a new term that I receive your scholarship again, and I have many things to share with, but I don’t know where to start. You never know me, but you give your money to you. When I receive your money, I feel very heave, not only the money, but the feeling and love. We are born in mountains, and know nothing about the outside, but we never are forsaken by the world. There are many people in social, who take care of us and help us, so we must study hard, and I will answer your favor with my study. Your help not only encourage me in physical, but in emotional. We want to say “thank you very much” face to face if it is possible, all long you help us. Please feel assured that we will never make you disappoint you.

We, four brothers and sisters, are learning in school. My oldest sister needs

more money for her high school education. The education fees of us make our living harder. But I still Persist in studying to enter the college in my dream. Now I am a third-grade student in junior high school, and there are a lot of knowledge to review. The sentence, you mustn't lose heart, sooner or later your effort will pay off, always encouraging me to not give up my dream, which make my experience success. By the way, I want to tell you my exam this term, I am the first in my class and the fifth in the grade, although my study is lower than my imagined, I already tried my best.

I used to face the drop-out, the desire of learning touched my parents, so that they sent me to school again. I feel very happy when I see my peers have to go out for jobs, and I must cherish this opportunity to change my life mu future.

Yours Sincerely,
Mu xiuzhen

Letters from the students that Mai Pearls sponsors

Every year, Mai Pearls gives 10% of its profits to charity. Over the past 3 years, we have been making donations to Operation Blessing, an international charity with an office in Beijing. From here, the donations have gone towards their educational programs and Mai Pearls have been able to support 41 students during this academic year.
All 41 students have written letters to Mai Pearls, telling us a little more about their lives and how the sponsorship money has helped them.
Kindly, Operation Blessing have translated 7 of these letters so that I can update you on what a difference this sponsorship makes.
Here is the first letter;

Dear Uncles and Aunties:

How are you?

Hopeful you are in good health and your jobs are going smoothly.
I have learned in the bright class for three years, and I can’t imagine how fast time is, three years are just like three days. I learned much knowledge and I know how to handle the relationship between students and teachers. I'm much obliged to you for you love and your caution. Maybe I am a shepherd or a migrant worker without your help. It is you who help me realized my dream three years ago, and I owe you a debt of gratitude which I shall never be able to repay, maybe the only way I reward you is study hard.

There are four children in my family. Compare with my oldest sister, I am very lucky to have this cherish opportunity to study, and your help relieves the burden on my family. My family can't express how grateful I am to you.

Since China started carrying out the education policy of free tuition and free textbooks, we only need to make up for the cost of living in school. With your help, my family only needed to pay half of my living expenses when boarding in school, so I save some for my second sister.

I want to tell my living in school, we get up at 5 o’clock and sleep at 10:30 everyday, even I am really tired sometimes, I know why I am here; even I have pressures, I will change the pressures to motive; even I don’t know where I am next year, I should precious today, and I must never be unworthy of your love and our teachers' untiring teachings and my parents hope. If one of us must quit school, I have to give up my study to support my second sister, for she is a three-grade student in high middle school. In any case, all this could wait till the next day. No use worrying about it now.

Uncles and aunties, thank you very much for your help. After this year, would not you be in touch with me? I really want to in contact with you no matter where I am. May we keep in touch?

The Launch of the Autumn Winter 08 Collection

With the end of the Summer 08 sale comes the launch of the new Autumn Winter 08 collection.

In the Contemporary Collection this season we see a green revival which includes a range of inspiring natural greens.

This collection also plays with shades of neutrals; beiges and creams are must-haves of elegance with yellow and balsamic traditional hues highlighting the collection’s palette.

A great deal of sober colourings such as prune and deep purple can also be found in this season’s collection whilst flower patterns remain strong.

The Classic Collection continues to include a wide range which brings the public affordable classical pearl jewellery with some new and inspired design additions.

Enjoy browsing the new Autumn Winter 08 collection

Colours for Autumn Winter 08

Last Friday I had a meeting with the jewellery buyer of a large family run department store in the Bond Street area in London. Mai Pearls have been stocked at this particular store for just over two years and the meeting was to show the new Mai Pearls Autumn Winter 08 collection.

The collection, which will be launched on the website by the beginning of September includes not only the classical favourites but also lots of greens, browns and reds.
But here’s the hot tip: this particular buyer selected pieces that included silver or grey pearls and fluorite with greens and lilacs and amethyst. So it looks as though greys and purple shades along with greens are set to be big this season.

Yang Xiaojuan's story

Here is the last of the translated letters from the Chinese students that Mai Pearls were able to sponsor last academic year;

Dear Aunties and Uncles:

How are you? How is your work?

I’m so lucky to have received your help and with a deeply grateful heart, I write to you. You have changed my life and I have gotten rid of my selfishness. I find that to give oneself to others is a happy and noble thing.

Time flies by so quickly. Soon, I will leave Juji Middle School. What does that mean? It means that I will start a new life. Now, although I have no idea about my own future, I am confident in myself. This confidence is from your encouragement to me, which gives me enough energy. I have received school materials through your support. Thank you very much.

When we were asked to fill out the question on what is our desire, I really had no idea. I find that future of mine is so uncertain. When I tried to get some advice from my family, they simply said: “Up to you to decide, or you might blame us later!” At that time, I found myself so isolated, but my elder sister encouraged me to continue to senior school and to enter university. She said: “Don’t follow the path I took.” My elder sister discontinued her studies 3 years ago because of our poverty. She gave up her studies so that my younger brother and I will continue studying. With your help and my elder sister’s support, I have finally chosen to go on with my high school education. I’ll try my best to realise the dream to enter university and later to help the children as you do. Even if I fail, I will not look back. At least, I have tried my best for my dream. Thank you very much. my dear aunties and uncles.

Wish you a good health and success at work. Wish you a happy life everyday.

Sincerely yours,
Yang Xiaojuan

Wang Zonglan's story

Below is a letter from Wang Zonglan, a student who has been financially supported via Operation Blessing (and Mai Pearls) in his education over the past 3 years and who has now graduated.

Dear Aunties and Uncles:

How are you? Wish you a good health and a success at work.

I haven’t written to you in a long time. Am now writing down this letter during a time when the flowers are blooming, I send my best wishes to you in this coming summer.

Time has passed by so quickly. I have already completed my 3 years junior of school and will soon start a new life. In the past 3 years, I have received so much help from you, which has given me the chance to go on with my studies and also the strength to cope with the difficulties. It’s you who has given me a bright future. Let me show my honest and deepest appreciation to you.

Your support to me has been able to support my living and studying, and change my life. You are the symbol of love to me. You lead me to the sea of knowledge. You show me hope in my desperate time. You give me the confidence and you taught me to face difficulties calmly and bravely. You are the spring shower that has fed hope to this heart.

Aunties and uncles, I’ll graduate from school, don’t know if we will have the chance to meet each other in future. Tomorrow is unknown, however, I’ll keep running on the spirit you give me. I know the only way to success is to master the knowledge. I’ll go on with my studies and realise myself through practice.

Please let me say thank you very much again. And I wish you good health and a successful work.

Sincerely yours,
Wang Zonglan

Operation Blessing

Here is a letter from Ma Hucheng, a Chinese child who was sponsored last academic year by Mai Pearls enabling him to go to school...

Dear Aunties and Uncles:

How are you? Wish you a good health and work successful.

Thank you very much for the support. I’m so lucky to have your help and I can go on with my studies. Before the start of this school term, I hesitated on whether to go on with my studies. At that time, it was either my brother or I who would have to discontinue with studies as my family can’t afford the tuition of us both. I wanted to give up my studies to allow my older brother the chance to continue. I really didn’t want make my mother to be burdened with our tuition fees.

On the school enrolment day, when I saw my neighbours’ children go to school together, I felt so painful. I thought I wouldn’t be able to go to school any more. But exceeding my expections, I returned to class and kept on studying again. It’s the help from you that gave me a chance to realise my great dream. I’m so grateful to you. Your support to me is like a delicious meal to a bird who would otherwise starve to death, allowing me to see the good that is on this earth. Thank you very much.

My dear aunties and uncles, I just wish you well to your health and work from the bottom of my heart.

Sincerely yours,
Ma Hucheng

Operation Blessing

Dear Aunties and Uncles:

How are you? I hope that you are well and your work is going well. Appreciate you extending a helping hand that has saved me from discontinuing my studies. With your help, there has been a great change in my studies and even in my life. My parents need not worry about my education fees anymore. Instead, they can now buy for me some school books and stationery relevant for my studies. Thank you so much for your help, allowing me to have a good foundation in life.

I am gradually realizing that in life, there will always be difficulties. But these challenges and difficulties do not have to dictate one’s direction of his development. I have never complained that the world is unfair even though it seems that all the tribulations fall on the poor and all the happiness is bestowed on the rich. I thought that we poor people suffered all the hardships in world. But now, I find that I’m wrong in my thinking. The rich get their success through their own struggles to break away from poverty. So, although living in these remote mountain regions, I won’t complain about how unfair my fate is any more. I believe that as long as I can try my best to work hard and struggle against all the obstacles in front of mine, I can also reach success eventually.

My dear aunties and uncles, thank you again for your help time after time. It has really caused me to think a lot about life, and now I can understand it better. Your help is so appreciated, it has done me a great favor and given me a desire to be able to soar.

Best wishes for your good health and good work.

Sincerely yours,
Cui Xuemei

Where do some of the profits go?

I have just heard from Operation Blessing in Beijing that during the year 2007-08 Mai Pearls were able to sponsor 25 chinese students through the Adopt-A-Student program.

Although many children living in poor areas in China are not required to pay for their full tuition, related school and educational costs exceed the ability of many families living in poverty and extreme poverty. Operation Blessing China’s Education Program has assisted thousands of children from 14 provinces with their tuition and related educational costs, helping many who otherwise would never complete a primary and middle school education.

I am hoping to receive some letters from the students that Mai Pearls have sponsored and once I do so, I will post them on the blog. Keep looking out for them!

Hilary Alexander in The Daily Telegraph makes some great suggestions for finding a frock that makes you feel fantastic and gives ideas as to how to dress it up or down.
