Lucky pearls
It has recently been reported that Alex Colyer who plays softball for the Baylors has a lucky pearl necklace that she wears to all her games. She says that she is very superstitious and that the pearl necklace is her good luck charm. It has fallen off a couple of times during a game and has needed to be restrung but she still holds onto it safely and would be lost without it.
So for those of you who haven't got themselves a lucky pearl necklace Mai Pearls have a few for you to choose from. This rice pearl necklace can be worn twice around the neck or perhaps you prefer a more classical style? What ever the preference, don't hold off getting one for too much longer.

Qing Dynasty Photographs
Rare 19th Century photographs of Chinese life have gone on display in Beijing. John Thomson, a Scottish photographer who visited China from 1868-72, took them. If you can't quite make the trip to Beijing, here's a taster of the exhibition. Although there does not appear to be much pearl jewellery on display in the photos, there is plenty here!

Luminosity
The May issue of Vogue reports that the shows really radiated with silk taffestas at Valentino and Dior, silk jacquards at Armani and carmine-red sequins at Alexis Mabille. If you fancy adding a touch of luminosity to your look, take a look at Mai Pearls' amethyst and pearl earrings which are wonderfully bright and even have a matching necklace!

Vintage
In this month's Vogue, it seems as though the editors cannot get enough of Vintage. From top tips when buying on ebay to new and exciting vintage jewellery and clothing sites. Vintage is the word on all their lips. To get the finished look, add a long string of cream pearls and as Mai Pearls' pearl ropes are so long, they can be worn around the neck 3 times, making them perfect for any neckline and giving them great versatility.

A pearl carpet?...
The Telegraph reported on 20th March 2009,
"A carpet studded with pearls and gems and commissioned for the tomb of the Prophet Mohammed has sold for £3.8m at an auction in Doha, Qatar.
The Pearl Carpet of Baroda, now the world's most expensive, is believed to have been created in India more than 100 years ago as a gift to the tomb in the holy city of Medina, Saudi Arabia.
Sotheby's said it had expected bidding for the Pearl Carpet of Baroda to start at $5 million and believed it would fetch a much higher price. Earlier estimates anticipated the lot fetching as much as £14.5 million. But the starting price was brought down to $4.5 million because there were few buyers than expected. It finally sold for almost $5.5 million.
The carpet is traditionally believed to have been commissioned by the maharajah of Baroda as a gift for the prophet's tomb. The maharajah died before the donation was made and the pearl carpet remained in his family.
It has an entirely embellished surface, studded with an estimated two million natural seed pearls known as basra which were harvested from the waters of the Gulf."
If you love pearls but prefer to wear them than walk over them, or your budget doesn't quite stretch as far as £3.8m, take a look at Mai Pearls.

Pearl Wedding Jewellery
From my office window I can see a cherry tree full to bursting with fluffy white blossom. This blossom reminds me of the fact that the wedding season is fast approaching.
As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, we at Mai Pearls have had a little spring clean by making some changes to the website's home page. There is now a pearl wedding jewellery page which once clicked on, divides into bridal earrings, bracelets, necklaces and bridesmaids earrings, bracelets and necklaces. This has been done to make the online shopping experiance clearer and more focused for the customer. Of course the pieces chosen for these pages are just suggestions and if you feel that we have missed out any particular piece from the main collection, please do let us know by emailing us at info@maipearls.co.uk

Ethical Pearl Jewellery
Easter is a little like Christmas in terms of supporting charities. It is fairly common to be able to buy a christmas card with part of the money going to a particular charity. This year I was able to buy an Easter card produced by Oxfam. It is the same with Mai Pearls. Everytime you buy something from our beautiful collection of pearl jewellery, you are in turn supporting a charity. The charity that we currently support is called Operation Blessing and 10% of Mai Pearls profits go to their educational program in south China. So why not make your money go further and not only buy some stunning jewellery but also support those that need a little extra help?

A summer of colour
However dark and dull the economic future may look at the moment, according to London Fashion Week, bright colours are going to be big this summer. From hot orange, shades of pink from pale peachy blush to hot fuchsia, greens and royal blues, muted tones are definately out. Not the easiest colours to wear for pale complexions, these colours are however great when worn as accessories including jewellery. To view the complete spring summer 09 collection click here and enjoy all that colour!

Spring Clean
This year, Mai Pearls has had a major spring clean of the site and we have developed what we hope is a clearer and easier to navigate site. The home page is where most of the change can be found with new categories such as Pearl Wedding Jewellery with a click through option to view bridal jewellery suggestions along with bridesmaid jewellery suggestions. The images are larger and clear now with an option to view a detail of each design.
We hope that you enjoy the new and improved site! www.maipearls.co.uk
